Did you realize that there is an exception to the two-midnight rule? It's called "physician judgment."

And although the 2016 Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) Final Rule included a revision to the Two-Midnight Rule, allowing for physician judgment when an inpatient stay would be less than two midnights, only recently has guidance become available to determine when this could be used.

In this webcast Dr. Hirsch, will review the exception, how and when to use it, and what to do when an inappropriate short stay admission slipped through.

Learning Objectives:

From this session you will...

  • Review the two-midnight rule and the allowable exceptions
  • Apply the exception for physician judgment for inpatient admission
  • Formulate case examples to meet the documentation requirements of the rule
  • Understand the process for correcting the status of patients inappropriately admitted as inpatient
  • Differentiate the billing of condition code 44 and a self-denied admission
